This week features a frank discussion about chiropractic and its effect on immunity, a strong case against spinal “misalignment” and subluxation and, maybe its time for chiros to shut-up about vaccines? - ED.
SCIENCE / ART
Does chiropractic improve immunity? Dr. Dan Murphy weighs in.
Life University West professor, Dr. Dan Murphy has weighed in on the controversial study commissioned by the WFC: The Effect of Spinal Adjustment / Manipulation on Immunity and the Immune System: A Rapid Review of Relevant Literature.
Consequently, many state and regional regulatory bodies have cited this document of any benefits of chiropractic care on immune function.
In a video interview with college president Dr. Ron Oberstien, Dr. Murphy breaks down the issue here and offers a counterpoint.
Other organizations are fighting back against the limited study, citing data cherry-picking and bias.
PHILOSOPHY
Can your spine be out of alignment? Chiropractic’s big idea has been misleading patients for more than a century
Paul Ingraham is not a fan of chiropractors (or any other manual therapist for that matter) however, he makes a few good points about flaws in a fundamental theory held by chiropractors.
In all the years that they have been talking about them, chiropractors have never been able to furnish proof of these mysterious subluxations which they alone are able to see. They may convince their clients, but never have they provided proof of their pretensions to men of science.
Paul makes the claim that spinal joints can’t misalign slightly. He suggest chiropractors need to modernize their description of what they are exactly treating. Do you agree?
POLITICS
On Vaccination & Chiropractic: when ideology, history, perception, politics and jurisprudence collide
Should chiropractors weigh-in on vaccinations? Anti-vaccination beliefs are prevalent among many natural-leaning healthcare providers, but chiropractors seem to be exceptionally outspoken. Some regulatory bodies have legislated that their members do not advertise, speak or hold any opinions on vaccination (other that the conventional “pro” medical stance), often punishable by stiff fines.
Chiropractors will cry foul when physios or medical docs hold strong negative beliefs against chiropractic treatments, yet continue to bash vaccines and the rest of medicine at every turn. Should we extend the same courtesy and keep quiet about matters outside of our scope?
